J. Bishop Grewell is the Acting United States Attorney for the District of Colorado. As Acting United States Attorney, Mr. Grewell is the chief federal law enforcement officer in the State of Colorado.  He oversees all federal criminal prosecutions, as well as all civil litigation undertaken on behalf of the United States Government.  He leads an office of more than 160 attorneys and professional staff members, in addition to approximately 20 government contractors.

Mr. Grewell became an Assistant U.S. Attorney in 2010. Mr. Grewell says he became a lawyer because he believes a system of justice based on written laws applied without favor is the United States’ most important ideal. Before becoming the Acting United States Attorney, Mr. Grewell served as chief of the Appellate Divisions in both the Districts of Colorado and Montana.

Mr. Grewell serves on the Criminal Pattern Jury Instruction Committee for the Tenth Circuit and previously served on the Department of Justice’s Appellate Chiefs’ Working Group from 2019 to 2022. He received the Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service in 2016.

Mr. Grewell is a graduate of Stanford University, Yale University, and Northwestern Law School. Before joining the Department of Justice, he clerked for Judge Timothy Tymkovich on the Tenth Circuit and worked in private practice in Chicago, Illinois.
